Christmas in July - Fun Facts and History!
The Australian 'Christmas in July' celebration is a somewhat unusual and some suggest even slightly eccentric festival that now attracts international travellers to the land down-under! Christmas in July' or Yulefest as it is also known is believed to have been born by accident one snowy wintery night in July of 1980 at an award-winning boutique hotel 'Mountain Heritage' in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. A group of Irish guests noticed the irony of winter weather in July and wanting to recreate the feelings associated with winter back home, asked the hotel proprietor if he could organise a few Christmas-style food and festivities for them that night. Thus was born Christmas in July sporting Christmas decorations, snowmen, mulled wine, carols, roast dinners, mince pies, plum pudding, egg nog, bonbons, Christmas crackers, log fires and the occasional snow fall amongst a magical winter Yuletide wonderland of festivities.

Printable Christmas Party Games
With holiday expenses running higher each year it's good to know that printable Christmas party games can help to make an occasion festive without breaking the bank. Holiday printer paper might help to make the games even more decorative or just red and green sheets can be used. If special holiday paper is purchased it could also be used for invitations and craft projects. White paper is often easier to read and may actually be the best choice considering the graphics. Quiet games like word searches and word scrambles can help to amuse children when adult supervision is distracted to other areas of concern.

A member of the ORHF discovered a real, authentic original Daylight whistle on Ebay; purchased it, and it is now on the locomotive. It is a Hancock 3 chime according to those who participated in the new whistle's installation. In my opinion, it sounds smooth and elegant. And I think it suits the engine perfectly. Some of the footage was captured by me, the rest was used with permission from 4449steam. And thanks to him for putting this entire movie together for me. This is also the very first video I've uploaded in HD format. The sneezing at the end happened while I chilled with some friends.

Christmas Lights - Carol of the Bells
Our Christmas light display in Tompkinsville, Kentucky. There are 42000 lights on 320 Light-O-Rama light channels. This particular song is Carol of the Bells by Mannheim Steamroller. The two mega trees are 25' tall with about 10000 lights per tree. The keyboards on the each side of the house are colored Plexiglas with 40-watt bulbs behind them. The light triangles under the eves are 400 mini lights. We also programmed the popular Wizards In Winter this year (just because it was fun to do!) At full load, the lights pull 207 amps but are only at full load for 4 seconds. It costs 65 cents/hour to run our entire show and the music is broadcast over FM station 89.3. We did a canned food drive this Christmas and received nearly 1300 pounds of food. And we have the best neighbors because they put up with the thousands of cars that came down our dead-end road for over 5 weeks!

Christmas Pageant Nativity Plays to Tell the Christmas Story
A Christmas pageant or Christmas nativity play is a popular event among Christian groups in the lead up to Christmas. It tells the story of the birth of Christ in the town of Bethlehem, which is commemorated every Christmas. The main stage setting is almost always a humble stable where the family was compelled to stay because of crowding in the town during a census. This nativity scene telling about the origins of Christ is the dominant symbol of Christmas among Christians.

While a nativity play takes varying forms in different Christian communities around the world, it invariably features Mary and Joseph with their new baby in the straw of a manger, or feeding trough, in place of a crib. The scene usually features the animals of the stable, and shepherds. The story may feature the surrounding events of the Roman census and the inn keeper who found the family a place to sleep in the stable.

Angels usually appear, but the favorite moment for the audience is often the arrival of the richly dressed Three Wise Men bearing gifts, who find the stable by following the Star of Bethlehem.

There is a great deal of symbolism in the story, as Christian messages are conveyed in the play. It serves as a reminder of the traditional religious meanings of Christmas to Christians.
However the singing of popular carols and audience participation are also looked forward to as seasonal Christmas entertainment, especially among children.
Many churches and religious schools include the production of a nativity play at Christmas time as an important feature of their annual calendar of events.

The basics of home Halloween decorations are simplicity. Orange and black construction paper is a must. You also need Elmer's glue, scissors, tape, and crayons or magic markers. The best way to start is to start at the top of the room. You can make a boarder to go around all four walls with a paper chain. Simply cut your orange and black construction paper into strips. Curl the strips into a ring and glue or staple them. They must be interlocked and should alternate in color from black to orange. If you really want to get gruesome you can add some blood red construction paper to the chain. To be more creative you can draw symbols of Halloween on each strip to give it more character and depth.

How To Create Your Own Home Halloween Decorations
While still working on the top of the room, think of things that dangle from the ceiling. You can make cut outs of the skull and crossbones, witches, black cats, or ghosts from your construction paper to make some great scary figures. The paper is light enough so if there is even the slightest breeze your figures will move with it in a eerie fashion. To make this home Halloween decoration more creative, you may want to create mobiles with the figures by hanging your cut outs on descending sticks hung by fishing line or twine. If you have extra cutouts paste them on whole sheets of construction paper to give it a colorful back ground.

On your snack table, you can play a joke on your guests by decorating with Halloween food. You could glue all the candy corn together in a huge ball so that when a friend tries to take one, the whole glob of candy corn comes up in his hand. Think of eerie foods that you can serve like gummy worms and marshmallow eyeballs. Your can take the paper plates and draw monsters or scary images on them. Put on a scary movie in the background with the sound off. These can give the room an extra feature of the Halloween spirit. You might want to die your curtains orange or another Halloween color and put candles in the windows. From the outside the candle looks nice but from the inside the candle can cast eerie shadows on the curtain creating a cool special effect. The skies the limit with home Halloween decorations and your imagination and creativity will flourish once you get going.

The history of Halloween goes back 2000 years. Many believe that Halloween's origins are found in the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who were located in Ireland, the UK and the northern parts of France, celebrated their New Year on the first of November. Samhain was celebrated the night before the New Year.

Why Do We Celebrate Halloween - The Spookiest Holiday Of The Year
The New Year, Celts believed, marked summer's end, harvest time, and the start of dark, cold winter months. Those winter months were associated with death by these people. On October 31, the night before the New Year, the Celts celebrated Samhain. This day, they believed, was when the ghosts of the deceased returned to earth because the boundaries between the living world and the dead world blurred.

When we think of "Trick-Or-Treating", the origins can probably be found in the English All Souls' Day parades. During these celebrations, the poor would come out and beg for food from the more wealthy families. When the families gave them pastries called "soul cakes", they asked for the poor to pray for their relatives that had passed away.
Another possibility that may have grown into "Trick-Or-Treating" is the tradition of people leaving bowls of food in front of their homes. They did this to keep the ghosts that were wandering the earth from entering.
Dressing in costumes has a couple possible origins. European and Celtic people both felt winter was a frightening time. It was cold, it was darker, and the possibility of running out of food was great. When they reached the time when they thought the dead returned, they thought they might encounter these ghosts whenever they left their houses. The wearing of masks and costumes grew from these people donning masks so the ghosts would not recognize them!
This holiday was brought to the US by Scotch and Irish immigrants in the 1800s. At that time, much of the "spookiness" of the holiday was removed and a sense of community and fun were added. Although scary themes are still the focus of many Halloween celebrations, that scariness is done for fun, not because of actual fear.
Halloween is currently the 2nd largest commercial holiday!

Christmas in July - Fun Facts and History!
Interestingly, the earliest reference for the phrase 'Christmas in July' was in July 1933 at a girl's summer camp in North Carolina USA. The term later gained momentum with the release of the Hollywood movie comedy 'Christmas in July' in 1940. Later in 1942, the Calvary Baptist Church in the USA celebrated 'Christmas in July' featuring a sermon 'Christmas Presents in July' which also included the erection of a Christmas tree, which by the end of the sermon would be covered with donations and gifts from the congregation. The donations and gifts are then distributed to missions worldwide. In 1946 this annual service began to be broadcast over local radio. It was not until the 1950's that American advertisers lead the way for "Christmas in July" themes for sales.

While the Yulefest has become an incredibly popular annual Australian non-official holiday season, Christmas in July in Copenhagen, Denmark at Bakken is quite unique, featuring the annual World Santa Claus Congress. Bakken is a popular amusement park where hundreds of Santas, Mrs Clauses and elves from around the world come together to be jolly at this festival each year. They hold parades and love to go to the beach for an annual beach paddle. It's known to be quite amusing to see all these Santas at the beach. The King of Santas for the year is named during this 'Christmas in July festival' and many challenging issues are discussed like what is Santa's true homeland and what size presents should be given! There are even belly shaking chuckle competitions as part of the festivities at this fun event.
Here are some universal thoughts on some of the symbols related to Christmas in July:
- Red is the main colour of Christmas in July - represents the magical flow of life, the blood that flows within all of us - so remember to let your love, passion and energy flow. Commit to show your love a little more each day and do what you do, no matter how insignificant you may consider it, with a little more love and enthusiasm each day and you will discover a new passion for life within you and a new flow of energy.
- The second colour of Christmas in July is green - greenery reminds us to honour the everlasting transformative element of nature. Everything is radiating energy. Energy does not die it merely transforms. Green soothes our heart knowing we are part of an endless cycle that disburses and rebirths anew.
- The combination of Red and Green on the colour wheel - red and green are opposites and opposites create balance. These two prominent colours of Christmas in July draw us to a deep unconscious connection to harmony and peace that we all seek within. The Christmas wreath has both red and green and is tied with a ribbon to remind us that we are all tied together; we belong to each other!
